Degree level in Psychology was opened in1980 AD. Prof. Godat Man Shrestha (Philosophy), Mrs. Jaya Pandey and Mr. Ram Prasad Sharma are the pioneer faculties of the department.

Training in basic counselling was conducted in the department with help of United Mission trained counsellor to the Nepalese Psychologists during 1990s. Counselling Psychology has increased its significance with Bhutanese refugee problems in the 90s and later the armed conflict that last ten years leaving millions of people with psychological problems. Keeping in the mind the importance of counselling, one year Post Graduation Diploma in Counselling Psychology (PGDCP) was launched at the Department of Psychology and Philosophy in February 3, 2005. In March 2014, M.A. in Clinical Psychology was launched. Three academic programs (PGDCP, B.A. and M.A.) have been conducting, respectively, in morning, day and evening shifts at the department.
